If you want to work on a UK construction site, you almost certainly need a CSCS card. Eight colours, eight qualification routes, one test. This is the 2026 guide: which card you need, how to apply, how long it takes, and how to fast-track if you already hold an NVQ.
The 30-second answer
- Green — Labourer. CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment test + Level 1 H&S award. £36 application.
- Red (Trainee) — temporary while you complete an NVQ. Usually held for 3–5 years.
- Blue — Skilled Worker. NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) + test. £36.
- Gold — Advanced Craft / Supervisor. NVQ Level 3 + test. £36.
- Black — Manager. NVQ Level 4/5/6 + test. £36.
- White (PQP) — Professional. Member of a recognised body. £36.
- White (AQP) — Construction-related degree. £36.
- Yellow (visitor) — site visitors, no manual work. £36.
The CITB test (you cannot skip this)
Every card except the Visitor card requires a current CITB Health, Safety & Environment test pass within the last 2 years before the card application. £22.50 to book. Most centres have slots within 1–2 weeks.
Three versions:
- Operatives — for Green, Red, Blue, Gold card holders doing on-tools work.
- Specialists — for trade-specific roles (e.g. plumbing, demolition, highway works).
- Managers & Professionals — for Black, White, and supervisory Gold card holders.
Fast-track if you already hold an NVQ
If you have a UK-recognised NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in a construction-related trade, the route is:
- Book and pass the CITB test in the right version for your role.
- Apply for the card online at cscs.uk.com — upload your NVQ certificate scan.
- Card arrives in 5–10 working days.
Total: usually under 3 weeks. £58.50 in fees.
I have no qualifications yet — what do I do?
The standard route in 2026 is:
- Complete the Level 1 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment course (1 day, ~£100, available everywhere).
- Book and pass the CITB Operatives test (£22.50).
- Apply for the Green Labourer card (£36).
- Find site work, get sponsored onto a Level 2 NVQ, upgrade to Blue when complete.
Total cost to start: around £160. Total time: usually under 4 weeks.
Card validity and renewal
Most CSCS cards are valid for 5 years. Renewal requires a fresh CITB test within the 2 years before renewal. The card will not be reissued without it. Plan ahead — annual renewal reminders go to the email on your CSCS account.
If your card is from outside the UK
EU and overseas construction qualifications are not automatically recognised. You will usually need:
- A UK ENIC statement of comparability for your qualification.
- An English-language CITB test pass (the test is available in multiple languages, but most cards now require the English pass).
- For supervisor / manager cards: additional UK-specific paperwork.
The mistake that gets people barred from site
Walking on site with an expired card. Most main contractors now scan CSCS cards at the gate and refuse entry to expired ones — and you do not get paid for days you cannot work. Set the renewal reminder in your phone for 90 days before expiry.
